The crowd thinned out once they were off the bridge, and they were again a group, minus one. Large rocks piled high on both sides formed walls that led the way.

“I’ve never seen a landscape like this before,” Ariana said.

“A fissure zone is unique. See those rock formations,” Liev said pointing. “You will not see something like that except in a rift valley.”

“It’s magical,” Harper said.

“It’s scientific,” Liev responded. “I can explain the geological significance if it would be beneficial.”

Harper laughed. “I understand the geology. But being here, breathing it in, that’s not so easily mapped. Except maybe for a poet, eh?”

Liev rolled his eyes at Ariana, clearly confused by what Harper was rattling on about.

“I understand what you mean,” Ariana said, turning to Harper. “For me, the scope of it is something you can only feel when you’re here, experiencing it,” she continued.

Peyton smiled. I’m really starting to like Ariana.

As they approached a staircase to the right, Liev asked, “Shall we get a view from up there?”

Everyone said yes except for Peyton, who said she wanted to get more shots of the rock formations and would wait down on the path. That was only partly true. Terrified of heights, she held no desire for an elevated view. Losing her footing and plummeting to her death in a freak accident, forever being branded the “unfortunate American tourist,” was high on her list of worries, although she knew it was probably ridiculous.

She began to take random shots of the rocks. I wonder what Ronnie would want. She took a bunch of close-ups of the flowers. I think she was trying to get different angles. Maybe I should get close-ups. As Peyton zoomed in she made a splendid discovery: there were faces in the rocks. At first she thought it was a fluke or that she might be imagining it, but as she looked at rock after rock, she saw faces in nearly each one. That one has a strong nose. That one looks like it’s smiling. It even has moss for hair. Wow, those two look like they’re having a private conversation. The one on the left has such a mischievous expression, as if the other one just told it a secret. Enthralled by what she saw, Peyton continued scanning the rocks. Oh, I love the one with the grimace and moss for his nose and those bushy eyebrows. Crooked teeth! That one is the old man with crooked teeth. I have to capture this all for Ronnie, she thought as she began clicking away from different angles.

“Hey there,” Harper said, startling Peyton.

“Oh, hey. I didn’t see you guys come back down,” she replied.

“The view was gorgeous,” Ariana said. “We can wait a few minutes if you changed your mind.”

“Thanks but that’s okay. I’ve been having fun taking pictures of the rocks.” She paused, nervous to continue but decided to see how they’d react. “I don’t know if you see it, but I see faces in them. See, look at that one,” Peyton said, pointing to old man with crooked teeth.
